Chameleon

This is a mixed media work on paper which sold online a few years ago.

It is comprised entirely (bar the hat and parts of the background) of magazine cuttings taken from cosmetic adverts, jewellery adverts and some from the national geographic magazine, which are mainly used to construct the eyes.

It began as a large experimental piece, originally depicting three figures, which I became somewhat disenchanted with and cast aside for many months.

I had the idea to create a 'mosaic' like collage after seeing something similar online and so I cut the original work down keeping just the head and shoulders of this figure and set about covering it in the snippets of magazine.

The whole image was a chaos of colour and so

I decided to unify the cuttings with acrylic paint and coloured chalks.

Thankfully, this beautiful androgenous looking creature emerged from the chaos; a glamorous throwback from the 1980's, I thought.  This image reminded me very much of Culture Club and the flamboyance of Boy George, hence the title of  'Chameleon'.
